Fifth-grade academic plus students from Connolly and Landing schools spearheaded a crayon collection for the Crayon Initiative, a nonprofit organization that gathers unwanted crayons and recycles them for children dealing with long hospital stays.

Under the direction of teachers Cheryl Carmody and Ken Altamirano, the fifth-graders researched the Crayon Initiative and wrote speeches about the organization’s efforts, which they presented to elementary classes at Gribbin as well as their own schools. The students also created donation boxes and posters to help inform the district community of their efforts. They will be collecting unwanted crayons until June.
