On Wednesday, Feb. 5 high school and middle school students learned the story of Cheryl Willis and her Civil War descendant, an enslaved man named Sandy Willis who also served in President Lincoln’s United States Colored Troops. The compelling story took the students through Cheryl’s childhood where she learned about the Civil War, her discovery to her connection of the past and into the present to reveal her current courageous endeavor and search for Sandy Willis’ grave. Throughout the presentation Glen Cove’s history was covered and it’s connection with the Civil War discussed. Students also had the opportunity to speak with the author and ask questions about her work and her past.
