March 10, 2020

Dear Glen Cove Community,

I am notifying you to give you an update our school status and on COVID-19 as it applies to the Glen Cove Schools.  On Monday evening, March 9, 2020, I was notified that a bus driver had tested positive for COVID-19 virus. The families of the students on those routes were contacted and are mandated to self-quarantine until March 20, 2020.

We closed today to investigate further and determine the extent of our concerns. Based on guidance from the Department of Health, the schools will re-open and we will resume our normally scheduled routines tomorrow, Wednesday, March 11, 2020. We also took this opportunity to enhance our cleaning protocols and I thank our custodial and maintenance staff, under the direction of our Director of Facilities for spending many hours today insuring that each of the buildings received a thorough cleaning to help combat the spread of COVID-19 and other germs.

As we reviewed events over the next 3-5 days, we will be canceling parent-teacher conferences at the Finley Middle School scheduled for Friday, March 13, 2020 and return to a normal school day schedule.  Parent- Teacher conferences scheduled for Thursday evening, March 12, 2020 will also be canceled. It is our hope to minimize gatherings and we will provide guidance on an ongoing basis as we move forward. The Department of Health clearly stated that third party individuals should not be quarantined and this would not justify the closing of schools.

As we are unsure of the status of the COVID-19 in the coming weeks, as are all school districts, we will provide you updates as we receive them and continue our vigilance to insure the safety of all students and staff.

Thank you,

Dr. Maria Rianna

Superintendent of Schools

Glen Cove City School District
