Finley Middle School recently hosted its first National History Day for all seventh and eighth graders. The event is part of an innovative curriculum framework in which students learn history by selecting topics of interest and conducting historical research using a variety of innovative technology. Based on the theme ‘Breaking Barriers in History’ students worked with middle school social studies teachers Mr. Contorno, Mr. Smith, Mr. Borysewicz, Mrs. Roberts, and Ms. Durham and Librarian Ms. DiPaola on a variety of topics to create websites that would educate others. Throughout the day students practiced critical inquiry, how to ask questions of significance, the importance of time and place, and were immersed in their research to create thorough and historically accurate websites. In addition, students from Glen Cove High School and R.M. Finley Middle School will continue on to compete in the National History Day Competition at Hofstra University on March 29th.
